Here are a few quick things to check first if your furnace isn’t working:

• Your thermostat’s setting—Make sure it’s set to “heat” instead of “cool” or “off.”
• Your thermostat’s battery—If the thermostat isn’t on at all, its battery may be dead. Changing it should fix this.
• Your air filter—If your air filter is packed with dirt and dust, it may need to be changed. Changing it will improve airflow and help your furnace do its job properly.
• Your circuit breaker—If you have an electric furnace, check to make sure your circuit breaker hasn’t been tripped.

During the first heat cycle of the year, a burning smell is not uncommon for the first two to three minutes your heater runs. This is simply the dust and debris that has accumulated in your heat exchanger and heating element burning off. If you smell burning rubber or plastic, and the smell doesn’t go away shortly, shut off your furnace immediately and call Superior Air Services for immediate help.

There are a number of different reasons this could happen. The heating element for your furnace could be failing to ignite or turn on. Your gas supply may be interrupted. This is typically a sign of two things: short cycling or overheating. Short-cycling is caused by having a furnace that’s too big for your home or a blower fan that is too powerful for your ductwork. This creates pockets of extremely warm air that shut your system off prematurely. Overheating is caused by heat not being able to escape your system fast enough, usually due to a blower fan or heat exchanger problem.
